3M - iOS app incompatible

These are instructions on how to transfer a book from a computer to an iPad (or other iOS device) when the device is too old to use the 3M app.  The 3M app requires iOS 5.1 and newer.

On Device: Install & Set Up App
We use BlueFire Reader because it is a good, stable free reader app.
  1. Open the App Store on your device.
  2. Search for "bluefire."
  3. Install the free BlueFire Reader.
  4. Open the app as for first use - BlueFire will ask you to login with an Adobe ID.  Adobe IDs are always an email address and a password you were allowed to create.
    • Already have one?  Enter it now.
    • Do not have one?  Tap the "Create a Free Adobe ID" link.  When you have created your Adobe ID, return to the app and input this information.
On Computer: Install & Set Up 3M Software
For install links and use, see the instructions page for computer users.

When the 3M software asks for an Adobe ID, you must choose to input the SAME personal Adobe ID used to set up the BlueFire app! Transfers will not work if you skip this.

Transfer to Device
These instructions assume that you already have iTunes on your computer.  To get this free software:  iTunes download page

  1. Plug your device into the computer.
  2. When iTunes comes up, click on the name of your device.
  3. Click on "Apps" in the navigation bar above the device's summary area.
  4. Scroll down (past Sync Apps section) to the "File Sharing" section.
  5. Click on your Bluefire Reader app in the list. This should pull up a list of all documents/books in the Bluefire app.
  6. Click "Add" below the list of files.
  7. The Add dialog box comes up.
    • Browse to find "Documents" or "My Documents" folder on your computer.
    • Select the folder "My Digital Editions" (this is where the 3M software stores the book files).
    • Select the EPUB file with title of your book from inside this folder. Click Open, if necessary, to finalize selection.
  8. You should now be back at the iTunes window, and the title of the book should be in the list of files for the Bluefire Reader.
  9. Eject the device from iTunes.
To read your book, open the BlueFire app.  The book will be in the normal Library view, tap it to open it.
