Born in Johnson County on May 8, 1917, John Anderson, Jr., was a 1944
graduate of the University of Kansas law school. He practiced law in
Olathe and served as county attorney, state legislator, and attorney
general before winning the gubernatorial election in 1960. After
finishing his second term, Anderson returned to the practice of law. In
1972, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for governor a
third time. That year, Republicans chose Morris Kay who lost in the
general election to Robert Docking.
