3M on Your Computer

Everything you need to do is contained in the 3M software--search and checkout a book, read it, transfer it to a portable device.  There is no need to visit a website or use any other programs for this service. 


  • Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP (service pack 3).  XP users--please realize XP is very old and Microsoft will not support it after April 2014. 
  • Mac OSX 10.6 and above.
  • Transfer to ereaders such as the Nook, Kobo, etc, list found below.

Getting Started

Download Software, Log in!

  1. Download the 3M Cloud Library software. System requirements are listed on the download page, which will open in a new window.
    • Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP (with SP 3)
    • Mac OSX--page must be opened in either Safari or Chrome browser.  Please note that some Macs flag the 3M Cloud Library as being from an unknown source.  When prompted, allow 3M Cloud Library access.
  2. Open the software to set it up for your initial use.  Answer each field!
  3. Selecting Location- you will need to select Country and State.  
  4. Select Library-- "State Library of Kansas - Capitol Building."
  5. Library Card ID-- enter your 6-digit Kansas Library Card number. Your local public library card is not compatible with this system. If you need a Kansas Library Card, please visit your public or school library to get one.
  6. Pin/Password--your birthdate in MMDDYYYY format. Example: January 1, 1980 should be entered as 01011980.
  7. Check the "agree to terms" box and then Login!

Adobe Authentication

When you log in or the first time you check out a book, the software will ask to set an Adobe ID (this software is based on Adobe technology).  If you have:

  • Used Adobe Digital Editions on your computer before, the system will want to use the Adobe ID already in this software.  Say Yes.
  • Have not used Adobe Digital Editions on the computer before, you may set a personal Adobe ID or choose to use a system-generated ID.  Either is fine!

Overview of Sections

The 3M Cloud Library software has four main tabs for discovering and using books.

This is the display case of the library.  Normally we will have a "New Additions" and a "Recently Popular" section, with other shelves added from time to time (we like to make one for the yearly Kansas Notable Books awards, for example).


Categories are the "subject browse" section of the app.  It contains an Advanced Filter button that allows you to only see books that are available to check out right now (this is what is shown in the "find a book now" section below.  This option will stay on until you turn it off!


This is a very simple search.  Try a one-word search for best results, such as the last name of an author or a couple of words from a long title.  The Advanced Search button on this page allows you to only see books currently available for checkout in your searches.  This option will remain on until you chose to turn it off.

My Books

This is your account screen.  It shows your current checkouts,

  • Currently Reading area appears as a bookcase.  It will show the books you have currently checked out. Clicking the List View button allows you to return books early.
  • Holds will always estimate how long of a wait you have on your books and allows you to remove books you no longer want.  For more about holds, see the Other Options below.
  • Wish List is an area to save books that the library does not have yet.  If you stumble across a book that is suggested, but we do not have, you may add it to the wish list.  If the library purchases that book, it will appear in your Holds list. 
  • Reading History preserves what you have read, and any ratings you have applied to those books.  You may delete your reading history from this area.
  • Message Center hosts notices and updates from the library, and notifications of items available on your holds or wishlist (if you have not yet seen them).
  • Account Profile is where you can log out of the software and set your email notification for holds.   More on setting your email in Other Options below.

Get a Book Right Now!

The Categories tab is the best way to find a book to read right now.  No holds or extensive searching for these books!  To turn on the option to browse only books that are available, go to the Categories tab and look for the "Advanced Filter" button on the right side.  Open this, and select "Books available to check out" on the list.

Once this is selected, the categories will only show what you can check out immediately.  Click a main category tile (like Fiction) to choose a subcategory (such as Romance or Mystery).

Check Out a Book!

When you have found a book you are interested in, click on the book's cover or the checkout/holds button.  This will pull up the Book Detail page.  Note that you can view a full summary as well as similar books to the one you are interested in (usually other books by same author).
  • Click the green button to finalize check out.  If all copies are checked out, it will be a gray hold button instead.
  • Immediately after clicking Check Out, you will be taken to the My Books tab. The book has been checked out to you for 14 days.
  • The new book will appear on in the Currently Reading section and download. You are ready to use the book.

Reading a Book on the Computer

  1. Go to the My Books tab of your software.  Click on the cover of your book from the wood-paneled area.
  2. The book opens.  Note that the book opened in a new tab called EBook.  This is your reading pane.

  3. To turn pages: use the arrow buttons on the side of the book page; the arrow buttons on your keyboard; or the scroll wheel on your mouse! 
  4. Use the Close button on the upper left side to exit the book.

  • i pulls up the Book Details box you saw during checkout.  From here, you can check in the book early, see the table of contents (jump forward by chapter if necessary), and see any bookmarks you have created in the book.
  • Large & small A buttons allow you to change text size.  
  • The magnifying glass allows you to search inside the book for a keyword. 
  • Faint square box is the bookmarks feature.  Bookmarks may be set with additional notes you create.

Transfer to a Device

A Nook Simple Touch was used in these instructions. 

  1. Turn on your device, and plug it in to the computer.
  2. Open the 3M Cloud Library software (if you have not already) and go to the My Books tab.
  3. The software should be recognizing your device as connected, and there should be a green transfer button for each book.

  4. Click the green "transfer to device" button for the book.  It transfer quickly, and show when complete (the green button will disappear from that book now).
  5. Eject your eReader from the computer!  You are ready to read your book.  Most ereaders will place the transferred book into its library section.  If the book is not obvious, or you have too many books on your ereader to see it easily, use the search feature in your ereader library to pull up the book (part of the title or author's last name will work).

Compatible eReaders

These are the devices that Kansas users have reported as compatible with transfer from the computer. 

  • Nooks (the Tablet and HD/HD+ are compatible with the Android mobile app)
  • Kobos
  • Literati Reader
  • Sony eReader--though some models may need you to use the manual transfer below.
  • Pandigital

Incompatible reader: if your ereader is not recognized by the software, please try the manual transfer (does not work for Kindles).

Other Options


When a hold is placed, the progress of a hold is shown on the My Books screen.  It estimates the wait period for a book based on the number of people ahead of you in the list, the maximum checkout period of 14 days, and the number of copies of the book the library owns.  It does not mean that you will have to wait exactly that long--after all, books can be checked in early! 

Setting Email Notifications: 

  1. Click on the My Books tab if you are not already there.
  2. Select Account Profile (at the bottom right).
  3. This opens an account information box.  Click on Email Notification.
    • Select Yes, notify me
    • Input your email address in the space
    • Click Save!

6. You will receive a confirmation email from 3M's Software Support team.  Follow any directions in this email to finalize your setup!

Note: return to this area and use the "edit" feature to change your email address at any time, or turn off email notifications. 

Checking out a hold: your book will appear with a green Check Out button in your Hold List when it is available.  You have a grace period of 72 hours to check out the book before it is passed to the next person.

Managing holds: decide you do not want a hold anymore?  Click the Remove from Hold List button, or if the hold is not shown in the top few books, click Show All to see all of your holds.

Returning a Book Early

  1. Go to the My Books tab in your 3M software.

  2. Click on the List View button (upper right corner of the wood-paneled area)

  3. There will be a red Check In button for each book. 

Please note that checking the book in on your account does not remove any book you have loaded to an ereader (such as a Nook).  You will need to delete the ebook from your device. Please do not return books on your account until you are finished reading them.

Reading on Multiple Devices or Computers

The 3M Cloud Library allows you access to your checkouts on all versions of the software/mobile apps.  The software will save your spot in the book based on the last place you used it.  This auto-bookmarking is close but not perfect (different devices have different screen sizes).  Regular ereaders (like the Nook, Kobo) will save your place on that device, but cannot communicate what page you are on to the 3M Cloud Library software. 

Logging Out of the Software

This is only necessary if you are sharing a computer, and someone else needs to log in to their account.  The library card number of the person currently logged in it shown in the upper right corner (black border).

1. Go to the My Books tab.
2. Click on Account Profile (bottom right)
3. Select Log Out Account
4. This will log you out and close the software.
