He was a Kansas delegate to the National Convention held at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1856, at which the Republican party was first formed as a national organization. Served as Kansas Territorial legislator. Civil War veteran: Captain of the "Kansas Rangers," Company I, Second Regiment, Kansas Infantry. He introduced the first resolution ever offered in the Kansas Legislature favoring women suffrage. He was murdered outside of the First Methodist Church, Hugoton, Kansas, and died in his wife's arms.
