cloudLibrary App for Kindle Fire & Android Devices without Play Store

Installation is a special workaround  for Kindle Fires and other Android devices that do not have access to the Google Play Store. The app will be downloaded from the cloudLibrary's website, not from an app store.

Install App & Log in:  

  1. cloudLibrary hosts the download. Please visit this page on your device for necessary settings and the app download. 
  2. The app will want you to connect to your library. Fill out as follows:
    • Location information
    • Library = State Library of Kansas
    • Library ID = your Kansas Library eCard number
    • Password = your birthdate in MMDDYYYY format.  No slashes.
  3. The app connects. For this first use, you will need to accept the terms and conditions to continue. Normally, the app will save your information and you will not need to log in every time. 

B. Brief App Overview
Main Menu: the app has several sections that are accessible through a Main Menu. To see this menu, tap near the 3 blue lines (far left corner) and it will pop up. 
  • Featured - this is the display case of the library.  Commonly, you'll see "New Additions" at the top. Other shelves will come & go (example: every summer we will put up a Kansas Notable Books shelf when the new list of winners has been released). 
  • Browse - this is subject browse, and the best place to start when new to the service.  
    • Fiction & nonfiction can be selected across the top of this page, then you can browse the main categories in each. 
    • Some categories will have further subcategories, this will be indicated by a down arrow next to the category name.
    • Stars - you can favorite a category of subcategory, which will put it in the starred tab at the top of the browse area.  This makes them easier to get to later.
  • My Books - your account screen.  You will access any current checkouts, your holds list, and your reading history from here. 
  • Filters - can toggle between viewing only "Available books" (books with no holds) or seeing "All Titles" (every book, even if all of the copies are checked out) while searching and browsing.
  • Settings - where you set your email address for notifications or log out (only do this if you share the device with others).
Search is the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the app. This is a simple search, and will work best with the last name of an author or part of a book title.  

Check Out a Book

You may browse or search however you wish, but for your first use this is our recommendation, as it will show you only books you can get right this moment (no books with holds lists): 
  1. Go to Filters and turn on the "Available books" option. 
  2. Go to Browse, then scroll through either fiction or nonfiction to find the types of books you prefer.
  3. When you have found a book, tap on it.  The book's details will show, and contain a green checkout button.
  4. The app will go to the My Books section now, and the book will show in the "reading" area.  If it does not download automatically, tap the cover to start download.
Reading a Book

  • Open a book: go to My Books and tap the cover of the book.
  • Turn a page: tap the right margin to go forward, tap the left margin to back up. 
  • Close a book: tap the center of the book page.  This pulls up a menu, tap the Cloud Library icon in the upper left corner to exit back to My Books.
  • Change Reading Settings: tap the center of the book page to see the Font button (text size); all other options are accessed through the button with 3 dots (top right corner).

What Else? 

  • Updating the app - as this app is not downloaded through an app store, app updates cannot be automatically downloaded & installed by your device.
    • How will you know to update your app?  We post notifications in the Cloud Library app about updates to all versions of the app (these show in the bottom of the blue menu), you can also check the the top of this page for a current version number & release date.  Check your app's version number under About from the menu.
    • To get a new version of the cloudLibrary app, you must uninstall the current version, then download & install as shown at the top of the page.
  • 5 books may be checked out at a time.
  • Books check out for 14 days. There is not a renewal option, but you can check out the book again immediately if no one else had it on hold.  
  • Early return is encouraged to release the book for another to use.  Here's how to find that option: 
    • Go to My Books. 
    • Tap the blue Return Books. 
  • Holds notes: 
    • To be notified when it is your turn for a hold, go to Main Menu->Settings.  Give the app your email address.  It will send you a confirmation email, follow any instructions in the email to finalize setup. 
    • You have 3 days to check out a book when it is your turn.  Available holds will allow you to check them out directly from My Books.
