In June 1969, a police raid occurred at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in New York City, that turned violent, spurring riots as the LGBTQ community demanded rights. The riots became known as the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. Marches and parades were formed in the following years, spreading to be celebrated across the world. Pride Month celebrates the progress made in creating equal rights for LGBTQ people, the progress left, and helps to spread awareness and understanding.
