Osawatomie, Topeka and Winfield State Hospitals [updated 3/2021]

Posted on October 1, 2015 at 11:03 AM by Bill Sowers

Kansas has been serving the needs of people with mental disabilities and developmental disabilities for over a century.  For many years much of the work was accomplished through institutions across the state.  Three of these state hospitals were at Osawatomie, Topeka and Winfield.

The Kansas Government Information (KGI) Online Library provides scanned copies of annual/biennial reports of the state hospitals at Osawatomie, Topeka and Winfield as well as some monographs related to the Topeka State Hospital at the following locations:

Osawatomie Annual/Biennial Reports (1867-1958)

Topeka State Hospital Annual/Biennial Reports (1877-1958)

Topeka State Hospital general publications

Winfield State Hospital Annual/Biennial Reports (1881-1958)

The institutions at Winfield and Topeka were closed in 1998 and 1997 respectively.  The Osawatomie State Hospital continues to work with patients.  Its mission is:  "To lead in providing compassionate, patient-centered care in a safe environment for positive outcomes."  Three other institutions still providing on site care are the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center , Larned State Hospital and the Kansas Neurological Institute at Topeka.
