The Fighting Twentieth

Posted on November 13, 2015 at 1:37 PM by Bill Sowers

OH, the flags are in the windows and the folks are in the street,
And I hear a bugle call that never blew retreat.
And the girls begin to cry and the men begin to cheer —
The Twentieth ! The Twentieth ! The Kansas boys are here.

--Lieut. Col. E. C. Little. From: "The Raggedy Kansas Man"

Veterans Day.... a time when we celebrate and honor those men and women who have served in the various branches of our armed forces.

This week Kansas Government Information (KGI) Onlne Library offers up a small booklet published over 100 years ago commemorating the actions of Kansans who fought in the Spanish-American War in the Philippines and the ensuing Philippine-American War.

"The Fighting Twentieth: History and Official Souvenir" is filled with photographs, names and a history of the Kansas 20th Volunteer Infantry Regiment which served in the Philippines during this often overlooked war.

Take a look at this booklet at the KGI Online Library and while you're at it look over the publications of the state's Adjutant General's Department and its divisions also available at the KGI Online Library:
