On Your Mark, Get Set... READ this summer

Posted on June 10, 2016 at 10:06 AM by Bill Sowers

This summer across Kansas people will be enjoying the state's annual Summer Reading Program with contests, parties, read-alouds and other events promoting reading over the summer.  The 2016 program, "On Your Mark, Get Set... READ," will encourage readers to not only pick up a book but to also grab a jump rope, sneakers, ball, flippers and of course a large bottle of sun screen and get out and run, walk, dance, jump, swim and hopscotch!  Active minds will work together with active bodies to achieve a healthy summer for kids and adults.

So how can the state of Kansas provide its citizens, both young and old, with an opportunity to participate in activities to get the heart beating a bit faster?

Scattered across our state are twenty-six state parks with trails, beaches and sites for volleyball, baseball, frisbee golf, riding, fishing, hunting, birding, wildlife viewing, running and strolling.  The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism provides information on these parks on their website as well as links to other information:

The KDWP&T website also includes a Calendar of Outdoor Events  as well as a page on Kansas wildlife.

The Kansas Government Information (KGI) Library also provides access to publications about state parks with online pamphlets and maps.  Here is a short sampling of past and present publications:
