[ARCHIVED] Book Highlight: Classic Horror

The original item was published from October 5, 2016 11:19 AM to October 5, 2016 11:28 AM

Horror stories remain popular through time, and we reuse and remake them constantly. If you like a movie (or other reimagined tale) based on a classic, it is a good idea to read the original if only for the detail and emotion that does not always translate. You may even find that the story has a totally different face.

Below are a small selection of books from the Recovering the Classics project, housed on Enki Library.  These books have newly designed covers from artists around the country, and since they have unlimited copies there's no waiting to check one out.

sleepyhollow
   The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
   by Washington Irving

A quick read to get into the seasonal spirit  (and funny, where most classic horror will certainly not be).
dracula
   Dracula
   by Bram Stoker

A seductive predator is stalking the fashionable districts of London. A must-read for any fan of vampire and paranormal fiction, as this novel crystallized most of our modern expectations.
grimm
   Grimm's Fairy Tales
   by Jacob Grimm

Most original fairy tales weren't really suitable for kids.  Check out this volume for the darker version of the stories you've always loved.
turnscrew
   Turn of the Screw
   by Henry James

The new governess on a rambling estate soon fears the children are at the mercy of ghosts. If you like psychological horror this novella is for you.  The 1961 film The Innocents is an adaptation of this story.
frankenstein
   Frankenstein
   by Mary Shelley

We all know the basic story. A brilliant young scientist reanimates a man cobbled together out of dead bodies. Most depictions skip a lot of details that bring such emotion to the themes in this book.  Just because something can be done, should it?
jekyll
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
   by Robert Louis Stevenson

Dr. Jekyll has become secretive and obsessed with a new project - and then a known killer is seen leaving the doctor's house.
