Tomorrow is Veterans Day and with that in mind we here at the Kansas Government Information (KGI) Online Library offer for your reading/viewing pleasure a very cool little book published over 100 years ago.
For many years after the end of the Civil War Union veterans would meet in annual Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) "encampments," sharing stories, meeting old friends, remembering those who had died. These encampments were held at local, state, regional and the national level and would usually last a few days.
Kansas had
annual state G.A.R. encampments for about 50 years after the Civil War. We have many of the reports of these meetings in KGI.
In 1902 the Kansas Department of the Grand Army of the Republic published a "Souvenir Book" on the Kansas G.A.R.'s trip to the National G.A.R. Encampment being held in Washington DC. According to a note tucked into the volume we scanned the demand for more copies of this booklet was so great that a second printing of 10,000 more copies was made.
With thanks to the Kansas Historical Society for lending us a copy to digitize the State Library of Kansas' KGI Online Library has added a copy of the 1902 Souvenir Book to our online Library:
The booklet is full of graphics, charts and stories. We encourage you to take a look at it.
