Kansas Health Risk Behavior Reports

Posted on November 28, 2016 at 12:13 PM by Bill Sowers

The Health Risk Behavior Reports issued by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment are surveys regarding both physical and mental health risks in behavior and lifestyle of Kansans. In the 2013 report (published in March 2015) the suveillance system is described as follows:

"The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a random digit dial telephone survey of non-institutionalized adults 18 years old and older living in private residences with landline and/or cell phone service. If applicable, adult respondents also provide limited data on a randomly selected child in the household via surrogate interview."

The System issues both a general health risk reports as well as health risk reports covering specific topics such as veterans health, depression and anxiety, mental illness, tobacco use, adverse childhood experiences, environmental factors, disability, caregivers and care recipients, economic instability as a social determinant of health, obesity and sexual violence.

The School for the Deaf, founded in 1861, provides residential and day programs for elementary and secondary children who are deaf. The school operates under the jurisdiction of the State Board of Education, which appoints a superintendent and accredits the school. The School is also accredited by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. The adopted curricula meet all state curriculum standards. Special emphasis is placed on language development and communication, with American Sign Language, English, speech, and audition complementing all skills that reinforce one another. It is the mission of the Kansas State School for the Deaf (KSSD) to provide students with total access to language and educational excellence in a visual environment while serving as a resource on deafness and deaf education to school districts and families.
