[ARCHIVED] Governors' Messages

The original item was published from January 6, 2017 8:23 AM to January 12, 2017 9:12 AM

The 2017 Kansas Legislative Session is fast approaching.  The Senate and House of Representatives will gavel in on January 9th and Governor Brownback will deliver his annual "State of the State" address on January 10th.

The State of the State, also called The Legislative Message has been delivered by Kansas governors personally, by others and/or in writing dating back to our first state governor, Charles Robinson. Generally the Messages give the governor an opportunity to summarize her/his agenda for the coming session.  They are also a review of accomplishments, a look at issues of concern and an expression hope for a better future.  In some respects they serve as a sort of "annual report" for the state with plans and possibilities for further development.  The older State of the State addresses are an excellent historical view of Kansas through the years touching on important topics of the day as well.

The KGI Online Library has copies of many of these messages online dating back to the 1860s. We invite you to peruse them taking a stroll back through the history of our state presented by the men and women who headed the executive branch of government.

You can access the Legislative Messages here:
