The original item was published from February 10, 2017 4:28 PM to February 10, 2017 4:41 PM

San Jose State University's iSchool and Gigabit Libraries Network have launched a call for proposals from libraries for $15,000 awards to experiment with TV WhiteSpace (TVWS) implementations.

"The award seeks libraries who will initiate partnership projects with neighboring anchor institutions to explore and develop innovative uses for TV WhiteSpace units to support remote fixed and portable library hotspots at new locations in their communities."

Win a $15,000 award for best ideas on using TVWS to benefit community. Signup!

TVWS uses the unused spectrum in the TV bands. It can deliver broadband to a hotspot miles away, even passing through trees, buildings or other obstructions. Installing TVWS hotspots can improve your community’s resilience by adding another communication capability for disaster preparedness.

The State Library initiated a pilot project some time ago in which several Kansas public libraries experimented with this technology, and it remains in use by Manhattan Public Library to deliver internet access in remote locations.

If interested complete a short application form at the Beyond the Walls site by March 6, 2017.
