Highlight: Summer Reading Skill Builders & Architecture eBooks

Posted on June 20, 2017 at 11:03 AM by Lianne Flax

Since the Summer Reading Theme is “Build a Better World” we are pointing out two “Skill Builder” online resources to help you learn everything from Microsoft Excel to biology in addition to some "building" ebooks. Digital Books and Online Resources are available to all Kansans. Ask your local library for a Kansas Library eCard to check out ebooks, or access databases if you cannot get in from the Online Resources page or links below.

Note: both resources below need you to register for a personal account in order to save your place in courses, tests, and other materials. Just choose the registration option from the main page.

Universal Class: 500 Online Courses in 31 Study Areas
These are actual online courses with an instructor, assignments, and lecture materials. Lecture materials can be both text and video. At the end of the course, students with a passing grade will be issued a certificate. Video audit is available on many courses so you can view materials without taking the full class (no certificate for this option).

Course topics range from science to history; from pet grooming to coding & web development. There’s even parenting and cooking courses. Businesses may be interested in the human resources, accounting, and computer skills topics. Universal Class is accredited through the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), but show UC to your employer to be sure they will accept it for professional development requirements.

Learning Express Library: Learning Modules at Your Own Pace

Need to refresh your math or writing skills? Learn use Microsoft Excel or Word? Practice for the ACT, GED, an occupational exam (postal worker, cosmetology, law enforcement, real estate)? Tutorials, practice tests, and ebooks are available for most modules. All are taken at your own pace and can be reused as many times as you need.

In addition to learning skills like interviewing, the Job & Career Accelerator section of LEL has a resume wizard and a job search feature. So, build your resume, save it, and apply for jobs directly inside the system. The page makes it easy to view what you have applied for already.

Digital Books on Architecture

If you’re more interested in the summer reading theme of “building” as architecture, three of our ebook systems have a number of materials available around that topic. See Digital Book eLending if you need instructions on setting up and using these materials.
