Book of the Week

The Jewel of Seven Stars
by Bram Stoker

Formats available:
  • RBdigital audiobook
  • Freading ebook (unlimited copies) - this links to The Lost Novels of Bram Stoker, which contains both the original and alternate ending to Jewel of Seven Stars.
Stoker’s less-known novel is considered inspiration of the mummy genre. An archaeologist has fallen into a coma after an attack in his own bedroom. Strangely, he has a set of instructions this ever happen to him, and it has to do with an Egyptian queen he’s obsessed with for years. He thinks he can help her come back to life. You’d think he was just crazy, if it wasn’t for all of the odd things happening in the house.

Written in the time of England’s Egyptomania, Stoker went to great pains to describe artifacts for his book. After the first publication in 1903, so many people were outraged by the "gruesome ending" that Stoker's publisher made him write a different conclusion to the story.  You can read both versions of the ending in the ebook on Freading, or on the Bram Stoker website.  I preferred the original.
