[ARCHIVED] Promoting Kansas in 1940

The original item was published from August 22, 2018 11:03 PM to August 22, 2018 11:06 PM

From its territorial beginnings to present day, Kansas has probably worked harder than any other state in the Union to entice travelers to hop off their wagons, horses, planes, trains, and automobiles... wanting them to take a closer look at the Sunflower State. Articles, pamphlets, radio spots, TV commercials... we've done our best to let people know that Kansas is a hidden gem, not just for the visitor, but for those interested in developing commercial ventures or industries.

"Kansas Today," a promotional booklet printed in about 1940 by the Kansas Industrial Development Commission, is a great look at Kansas. It is a travel guide but it is also intended for companies and businessfolk who might consider taking root and growing in our state. Governor Payne Ratner starts off the publication with an initial pitch:

"On behalf of the people of Kansas I invite you-through this booklet-to become better acquainted with Kansas. I hope you will come and see for yourself the attractions of the state ... the vast wheat fields ... the mines ... the oil wells ... the factories . . . the famous pastures and great herds . . . and the interesting and beautiful sights which nature has given Kansas. Our "good highways that go places" are engineered for your convenience, economy and safety. Our State Highway Patrol is efficient, courteous and hospitable. The people of Kansas, from border to border, bid you welcome. There is much to see and do in Kansas-come and let us show you our state!"

Photos, graphics, history, a great graphic map... Come thumb through this booklet and take a gander at Kansas over 75 years ago, available on the virtual shelves of the State Library of Kansas' KGI Online Library.
