Staff Spotlight - Mail Cart

Posted on March 28, 2019 at 12:04 PM by Maggie Witte

Mail cart with two postal boxes with handles and mail bags on it.

Name: Squeaky Bob, Talking Books

Job Title: Mail cart

Job Duties:
I make sure that the bags of books make it to the loading dock so that the postal carrier can transport them to the post office and sorting centers. I also get the books and machines from the postal worker and carry them back down to the Talking Books office.

Years with Talking Books: NOBODY KNOWS....and I'm certainly not telling.

Hometown: Emporia, Kansas

Favorite Book/Author/Series/Genre?  Owney, the Mail-Pouch Pooch by Mona Kerby...it makes me want such a devoted friend.

Have you ever faked reading a book?
All of the books that have ever passed on my cart...except books about transportation...or mail service...or any of the...shh...squeak...squeak......romance...squeak...books.

Best library memory:
Having one of the Kansas Talking Books workers sitting on my cart while I'm pulled by another.....oh, wait, that's just a dream that never happened...

Right...Okay. My best memory is being chosen, over all other carts, to carry Talking Books to and from the loading dock, making sure books get mailed to our patrons.

First book you remember reading on your own or being read to you?
That was definitely my warranty.

If you could have any famous person narrates any books, who would it be, which book & why?
I think it would be fun to have Daniel Day Lewis read Oil! by Upton Sinclair since he was in the movie.

What do you find most interesting/rewarding about working at Talking Books?
I really just love being part of the process of bringing stories to my fellow Kansans.

Farthest you’ve ever been from Kansas?
I'm so sad...I don't get to go anywhere other than the loading dock and the Kansas Talking Books office.
