[ARCHIVED] Chickens, Ducks and Geese... Oh my!

The original item was published from April 23, 2019 8:50 AM to April 23, 2019 9:14 AM

In 2018 the State Library of Kansas' KGI Online Library promoted a series of articles from the 1911/12 "Biennial Report of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture" on the care and feeding of your chicken, duck, goose, guinea fowl and turkey. This collection was such a big hit that we're pushing back in time to recommend another collection of articles on poultry from an earlier edition of the State Board of Agriculture's Biennial Reports.

The 1897/98 Biennial Report of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture has a series of articles in a section called "Farm Poultry."  Besides articles on just about every aspect of poultry management the collection include some beautiful pictures of chickens and other feathered fowl found on the farm. For example, the first page you see when you bring up the collection is an amazing etching of chickens and a corncob.

Articles within this 1897/98 collection are:

Farm Poultry: Its Rearing, Management, and Marketing, Especially as Applicable to Kansas Conditions and by Kansas People -- Poultry Interests Of The United States -- A Chronicle: The Lesson Taught By The Hens -- Shall The Farmer Raise Chickens? -- Farm Poultry Does Pay -- The Man With The "Chicken Fever" -- Standard Varieties Of Chicken -- The Uses OF Various Breeds -- Selection Of Breeds -- Breed And Care -- A Bright Illinois Woman's Methods -- The Breeding Fowls -- Systematic Feeding -- Foraging And Overfeeding -- Business Sense In Managing Fowls -- Good Advice To Beginners -- Keeping Three Thousand Hens -- Suggestions On Feeding -- A Contest In Feeding For Eggs -- A Hen Catechism -- The Brood Hen And The Chicks -- Early Chickens For Broiling -- Artificial Incubation -- Incubators And Brooders -- He Has Success With Incubators -- Brooding And Feeding The Incubator Chicks -- Management Of The Asiatics -- A High Estimate Of Black Langshans -- About Molting -- Poultry For Market -- Advice On Dressing Poultry -- Eggs Discussed From A Shipper's And Dealer's Standpoint -- An Average Egg -- And Cold Storage -- Prize Essays On Turkey Raising -- Turkey Culture As It Succeeds In Missouri -- Caring For Young Turkeys -- A Good Word For White Holland Turkeys -- Catching Turkeys -- Ducks And Duck Culture -- Good Ducks Profitable -- Duck Raising By A Woman -- Ducks Compared With Chickens -- Guinea Raising -- Parasites Of Poultry -- Geese And Goose Raising -- Toulouse And Embden Geese.
