An interesting publication on the benefits of men teaching in primary grades in schools. This short publication by the Kansas State Department of Education in 1969 centered around an experimental program funded by a federal grant at the Hugoton Elementary School.
The writers of the publication state that:
"The Hugoton Plan helps restore sexual balance to the environment of children in the primary grades by providing each child a daily relationship with an interested adult male. Research confirms the necessity of daily relationships with adult masculine and feminine influence in the development of personality and identification of sex role. With men teachers in the classrooms, young boys have sex role models to relate to while young girls identify their contrasting complementary feminine roles through the relationship. Children need the influence of men at school throughout the years just as they need fathers at home."
The report is fifty years old and dated in some of its language and ideas but it's a good read for those interested in an historical look at education and social views/values five decades ago. Photos are included of activities involving male teachers with students.
