Promoting Kansas in 1970

Posted on January 16, 2020 at 3:08 PM by Bill Sowers

Do any of you remember the jingle based on a Kansas tourism promotional theme in the 1980s, "Ahhhhhh, Kansas! America's Central Park. Linger a while!"?

Guess what? One of those commercials is on YouTube:

OK... Have I got an earworm going on in your head now?   "Ahhhhh... Kansas! Kansas!"

The different state agencies associated with enticing people to come to Kansas... tourists, settlers, businesses, etc... have used many themes and slogans through the years to promote the Sunflower State. Another slogan that comes to mind is, "Kansas: Midway USA."

How many other Kansas themes/promotional campaign slogans can you remember?

Fifty years ago in 1970 the slogan was promoting Kansas as "Clean Air Country." A publication issued that year by the Kansas Department of Economic Development, "Kansas: National Advertising Tie-ins," offered different art and copy for businesses, travel agencies, tourist site promoters, newspapers, chambers of commerce, industrial development organizations and other groups to use in promoting our state.

The 23 page booklet is filled with advertising samples with an order form for more "Clean Air Country" advertising material.
