There is a wonderful old volume in the State Library, "The Official Atlas of Kansas, Compiled From Government Surveys, County Records and Personal Investigations." [1887]
Three staff members here at the State Library, Trista, Rita and Vicky, worked on scanning, editing and providing access to the different county sections in this volume and we're happy to have it up in the State Library of Kansas' KGI Online Library for folks to enjoy.
Maps within the volume include county and town plats. The maps are colored. Some property owners/businesses are also listed by county. But for me what is really striking about this book are the graphics (etchings?) of buildings, farms, ranches, etc.
You've got to look at these graphics! They give a look at life over 130 years ago, probably a bit idealistic, but still beautiful.
The scanned pages are grouped by county within KGI. The pages load VERY slowly so be patient letting them come up. You should be able to magnify views to get a better look at things.
This volume should be of interest to historians, genealogists and folks like me who just like to look at cool artwork.
