[ARCHIVED] Road Tripping Around Kansas: Resources to Help Celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week

The original item was published from May 5, 2021 3:21 PM to March 4, 2022 3:33 PM

Today Governor Laura Kelly signed a proclamation declaring May 2-8 as National Travel and Tourism Week. That being said, the State Library of Kansas has several books that might help you plan a weekend road trip to some fun destination right here in Kansas, even if you don’t get the trip in during this week.

Want to see the oldest public library this side of the Mississippi operated continuously in the same building since 1876? Plan a road trip to Blue Rapids.

Want to do a Post Rock country tour? Check out the Post Rock Scenic Byway in Russell County.

Would you like to know more about Laura Ingalls Wilder’s childhood home? Head over to Independence.

These places are just a few examples of where you can experience getaways in Kansas. There are unique places to learn more about, if you want to venture off the major highways. Speaking of getting off the main roads, Kansas has 12 byways for you to journey on, if you want to experience local history and dining options, and get immersed in different areas around the state.

Be sure to check with your local public library to see if they have similar titles. Books that might be helpful include:
