Docking State Office Building small

Locating State Agencies in Topeka in 1981

One of the interesting questions we sometimes get at the State Library goes something like this: "Where was the Board of Nursing office located years ago?" Or, "What agencies had offices at 503 Kansas Avenue years ago?"

A great report published in 1981 answers that question for Topeka based state agencies 40 years ago.

Most of the report is a planning document for the 1980s on the present use/needs of state owned/leased space, and future space needs in Shawnee County for the rest of the 1980s.  It includes an inventory of current space, different scenarios on development of space, possible new building construction projects and space standards.

But there is a section of the report, from page 14 to page 30, which is an alphabetical list of state agencies in Topeka with addresses. The list includes the addresses of individual divisions, bureaus, sections and other subagencies with separate locations other than their parent agency.  This section gives the casual or serious local historian an idea where an agency was located 40 years ago within Topeka.
