Learn about the basics of how Siouxland Libraries launched a 1000 Books before Kindergarten program on a minimal budget and the grants and funding sources they found to expand the original program. Find out about benefits of the program, how to implement aspects of the program in your own library, and how to encourage parents/caregivers to serve as their child's first teacher.
Elizabeth Hoffman is the Director for the South Dakota MLS program through Emporia State University in Kansas. Prior to her work at ESU, Elizabeth worked in Youth Services at Siouxland Libraries in Sioux Falls, SD. She developed and implemented the Siouxland Libraries version of 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program and sought the initial funding through grant resources. Elizabeth received her BSed in History and Social Science from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and her MLIS from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX.
